Third Grade Summer Reading 2016
Summer is a great time for reading and relaxing. This summer please DO a minimum of 15 minutes of quiet sustained reading six days a week. There are numerous studies that support good readers read often. Our goal at P.C.R.S. is to assist in students in developing a LOVE of Reading. I have seen great improvement in my student's Reading skills since we adopted a D.E.A.R., "Drop Everything And READ" program for 15 minutes each school day. Rising Third Graders should be reading chapter books.
Use the attached Reading log to keep track of your reading. Also color a sun on the attached Summer Reading Challenge paper for every 15 minute increment you read. Please email me pictures of you reading in various places. I will check to see how you are doing this summer. After you finish reading an entire book, please rate your book on the Reading Log. In August, we will create a Third Grade "Hot Book Picks" list from your favorite summer reads.
Use the Lexile score from your Scantron testing to assist you in making good book choices. A Lexile measure is a valuable piece of information about an individual's reading ability or the difficulty of a text, like a book or magazine article. A book, article or piece of text gets a Lexile text measure when it's analyzed by MetaMetrics. A Lexile text measure is based on the semantic and syntactic elements of a text. Try to read books that are close to your Lexile score. Visit the www.lexile.com to get ranges of books and to assist you with the book selection process
There is a larger list of good book picks at the Diocese of Richmond website included within the Third Grade Language Arts Curriculum. Some of my favorite authors include but are not limited to:
