There will be an untimed Multiplication test on this Thursday. Students should practice those facts on ixl.com, completing their homework sheets and in the car using their flashcards. In Social Studies, we will determine the need for income tax and discover how that revenue is distributed. In P.E., students will be participating in games Hockey Sticks, soccer balls, yarn balls and tennis balls. Cooperative play will be reinforced as opposed to competition. Students will also investigate the " Heart" and ways to care for our bodies. We will discuss Dental health. In Technology, the children are creating a pic monkey picture to be shared with their grandparents. In Music, students will review previously learned knowledge of the recorder. In Art, in order for our Third-graders to experiment with more materials and media, they’ll use this class to complete their choice-based project, and briefly write in their journals about the artist experience. Grandparents Day was also very special. I think everyone who attended enjoyed it. I was VERY proud of my Third Graders. They performed very well.
The instructions for the Third Grade Science Fair project are listed below. This project does not need to be complicated. All Third Graders create a model of a compound/complex machine from 2 or more simple machines.
Third Grade Science Project-2015-Due February 25, 2015
This project should be fun and educational. Remember when we played with the simple machines at the Children’s Museum in November? For your Science Fair project, you are to build a model of a complex/compound machine by combining two or more simple machines. Use both blue papers and pages F54-F73 from your text to assist you with ideas. The materials are your choice. Your machine should fit on the top of your desk and be relatively easy to move. It does not have to be a new invention but you should be able to identify one or more uses for your machine if your machine were to be duplicated on a larger scale. Please note that machines make work easier and you must discuss that when you present your project. Your written report is a brief explanation of your machine and it should be written on a note card. Please label the simple machine parts of your machine (not each one but one of each type) and put the title of your machine, your name and Third Grade centered on the top of your note card. Do not use a tri-fold poster board for this project. Please come to school prepared to discuss your project with your classmates on the 25th. Please e-mail me with any questions.

I Can Change the World with My Own Two Hands-Due: Thursday, January 22, 2015
This year the Catholic Schools Week theme is Catholic Schools: Communities of Faith, Knowledge, and Service. Our school-wide goal for this project to assist each student in making the connection between the education at PCRS and how it is helping him/her to learn and grow as a Christian and a citizen, now and in the future.
In this activity, each student will design a poster entitled, I Can Change the World with My Own Two Hands. There will be one project/poster required per student. This project will count as three grades, one each for Religion, Writing and Social Studies.
Step 1: To make the poster, start by working out a design on paper, then making it larger on the poster board. Please use standard poster board 22” x 28”, white or colored-kids choice.
Step 2: On each project there should be a copy of the student’s handprints, traced on material of the student’s choice, cut out, and glued to the poster board. The title should be centered at the top and the student’s name with the grade under the name in the top right hand corner.
Step 3: Each student must write a three paragraph essay to be included on the poster. Each paragraph should be a minimum of 5-8 sentences long. The essay may be typed (size 16 font) or handwritten on lined paper. If a student chooses to handwrite the essay he/she must use best handwriting and get the lined paper from his/her teacher in advance.
1. In writing the essay, the first paragraph should include the opening sentence.
2. It should be written as a personal narrative from the student’s point of view.
3. The first paragraph should also describe how the student’s faith is being enriched on a daily basis, and how it will be enriched in the future by what he/she is learning at PCRS.
4. Paragraph Two should represent knowledge, and how learning at PCRS is enhancing the child’s current knowledge base, and how it will help in the future. Students may discuss favorite subjects/books and career plans for the future.
5. The last paragraph should examine service and how students live the Gospel message of serving others at school, in your parish, or community now. Also include how he/she plans to serve others in the future.
6. Include the essay’s closing sentence in the third paragraph.
Step 4: After your final copy of the essay is finished, glue it to the poster board and decorate the leftover space with photographs, hand drawn illustrations or hand colored pictures that relate to what is discussed within the essay focusing on faith, knowledge and service. Have fun! Be creative and neat. Remember these projects will be displayed during Open House and all during Catholic Schools Week.
Step 5: Each student should come prepared on January 22, 2015 to present and discuss his/her project.
Grades will be earned by closely following the “I Can Change the World with My Own Two Hand.” rubric located on the reverse side of this paper.

The Buzz about Third Grade-September 22, 2014
Happy Autumn!
This week’s mass is on Wednesday at 10am. Third Graders will be reading, bringing up the gifts, passing out the song sheets, etc. Please practice with your child if he/she brought home a reading. Join us if you can. Fall Picture Day is October 2nd, next Thursday. Students must wear church uniforms for fall pictures. Please have your child bring his/her sneakers for P.E. that day.
Tomorrow Progress Reports will be published on Schoolspeak. Please be very positive as you review with your child and electronically sign it after reviewing it. Many students received a less than excellent mark in behavior. I keep track of each day’s ending behavior and certain scores require an S or I. We started fresh today so every student has a good opportunity to bring his/her behavior mark up before Report Cards in four weeks. Please email me if you have any questions.
Third Grade students have several prayers to memorize this year. One is the ACT OF CONTRITION. We recite it everyday at dismissal so it is usually easy for them. Each child should practice this week and be prepared to recite it to me on Friday.
I only received one Reading journal today. I need to check to see if your child is reading one hour a week at home. Please send me the September Reading journal tomorrow. Thank you. Plus be reminded that your child is doing a minimum of 20 minutes of IXL practice weekly. When I checked today there were five students that had no practice time in the last 10 days. I will check again next Monday.
The Word Study test will be on Friday. Please have your child do the W.S. homework each night. I have modified it again so check the inside of your child’s W.S. notebook. The homework score is 10% of the Word Study grade. If your child does it, the grade is an A. Plus the homework is planned to assist your child in learning the features and spelling of the words.
There will be an Oral Reading test tomorrow on the vocabulary words of Theme 1. Practice them tonight and return the sheet tomorrow. Remember to treat the Science folder/booklet and Social Studies notebook/newspaper like a textbook and return them to school on the very next school day. In Science we are continuing our study of Astronomy with a test planned for the end of next week. In Social Studies we are beginning to study the Revolutionary war and how our country’s government began. You may dispose of newspapers #1 & 2. We are done with them. In Math we are beginning the unit on Addition.
This week during Art class, we’ll have a discussion of symbolism in art using da Vinci’s Last Supper as an example, and begin creating a color wheel emphasizing complementary colors in a central cross design. This week we will work on numbers from 1-30, and will do Math problems in Spanish. Students will work on making the sign of the cross. We will work on greeting someone and responding to a greeting. Have a wonderful week! During Music class, students will identify notes B-A-G on the staff and perform them on their recorder. In P.E., students begin to explore “Fire Safety” We will discuss our exit plans from our homes, reinforce our school exit routes, go on a hunt for “Exit Signs” and “Fire Extinguishers” throughout our school building. Please look for a homework assignment that relates to your home emergency plan. We will also be strengthening our bodies with exercise and game activities. During Technology students will complete the graphs from their “Olympic” games and work on word processing techniques. They will also be given time to take a Reading Counts test.

As part of our Reading Initiative, Third Grade students read for an hour each week at home. Please keep the Reading journal (that came home on Sept. 2nd) up to date. Each student should bring his/her reading journal to school every Monday so that I can check it. I am required to give the students a quiz grade each month for their Reading journals solely based on-did they read the required minutes? (It is an easy A.) Third Graders are also reading one hour each week at school. Each student is keeping a separate Reading journal in school. Plus students need to take a minimum of two story tests on Reading Counts every month. They can use the same books for their journals and for Reading Counts. Remember that I will average the highest two Reading Counts tests scores for one Reading test grade each month. You can take the same test up to three times to improve the score. Just wait 24 hours between each try.
Beginning this week, each Third Grader is required to use IXL for 20 minutes of Math practice each week. (No journal required as I receive a weekly report from IXL.) If you do the time it will really help your Math skills and you will receive an A for a Math quiz grade each month. I will assign some sites but some IXL time is kids choice.
This week Mass will be at 9:00am on Wednesday. Please have your child wear his/her church uniform and join us if possible.
Tomorrow we will have the Religion test on the vocabulary of Chapters 1 & 2. Use the games at quizlet.com for practice as well as your flashcards and the text. On Friday we will have a test in Social Studies on the contributions of the ancient Greeks and Romans to the United States. You should bring home the Social Studies notebook with the related newspapers each afternoon and return it to school each morning. The test will include the compass rose with the intermediate directions and working knowledge of the four hemispheres. In Math, we are working on rounding numbers to the closest tens, hundreds and thousands and working with money. In Language Arts, we are reading a realistic fiction story that teaches perserverance. In Science, we are learning about the Earth’s tilt on its axis and what causes the seasons and day and night. On Friday we will have the Word Study test.

The Buzz About Third Grade-August 25, 2014
It was great to see so many of you at the Annual Pirate Pride Potluck on Saturday. It was fun and yummy. Join us for Mass on this Wednesday at 10am if possible. Please have your child wear his/her church uniform on Wednesday. Families and friends are always welcome for liturgies and prayer services.
Please send your child’s Summer Reading Journal by this Friday. Let’s put Mrs. Paul on the roof. Next Tuesday, September 2nd, your child will receive the September Reading Journal. Our goal is 20 minutes a night/2 hours weekly. If there is a night or two during the week that you cannot do silent sustained reading, just catch up on the weekend. My goal is 30 minutes a day or 3 hours weekly. Research has shown that silent sustained reading really improves comprehension, vocabulary and fluency. Each student may choose what you read but make sure that you are READING not just looking at pictures or trying to find an I SPY item. Third Graders are ready for chapter books so find some that you enjoy. On my website check out the books/series that were recommended by last year’s Third Grade. Don’t forget that you need to read a nonfiction book for your first Book Report which is due on September 9th.
I believe that good communication between parent and teacher is vital to your child’s success. Please do not hesitate to contact me with any concerns/problems that you or your child have. E-mail communication is probably the easiest for everyone. My address is [email protected]. Please contact me if you have any questions. Please pay close attention to all Schoolspeak Communication. In fact, it is good to check it daily. N.B. Please check the uniform policy within the Student Handbook online for questions or concerns about the uniform. The uniform policy must be followed including shoes, socks and belts. The church uniform must be worn on Wednesdays when we have Mass.
This week we will be learning about amphibians and reptiles in Science. (We are expecting new classroom visitors on Wednesday.) We are reading a nonfictional story about the Olympics in Literature and learning about the contributions of the Ancient Greeks and Romans in Social Studies. In Math, we continue to work on time especially elapsed time and learning how to tell time to the minute. We have our first Math test on Thursday which includes using a calendar and telling time. Do your homework each night to prepare for it and practice at ixl.com Level D time questions at home. We began Rocket Math with subtraction facts. Please keep the flashcards we made today in your car for review while traveling. Our first Word Study test is this Friday. Keep your words in the envelope which is glued to your notebook and complete your homework each night to assist you in learning your words and features. Remember that sorting counts the same as spelling. In Spanish, the Third graders will review and recite basic greeting expressions and will respond adequately plus they will identify and recite the Spanish alphabet. During P.E.this week, we participate in skill assessment activities and we explore and participate in Presidents Physical Fitness Testing. During Music class, students will demonstrate their knowledge of rhythmic notation playing a rhythmic game from musictechteacher.com as a class. Students will also practice a new song for mass. During Technology, we will work at a site to practice time and elapsed time and research an animal.

The Buzz about Third Grade-October 6, 2014
We are going on a field trip to walk along the Portsmouth waterfront, visit the mayor’s office, sit in the City Council chambers, eat lunch at City Hall and then go to the Children’s Museum on November 19th. We NEED drivers. Please check your schedules. Permission slips will come home in this week’s Thursday folder.
We have Mass this Wednesday at 1pm. As always, families and friends are welcome to join us. We continue to pray a decade of the Rosary each morning. Please let your child bring his/her rosary to school for the month if he/she has not done so already.
Special thanks to everyone for supporting the magazine/cookie drive. It is a major fundraiser for the school. Please have your child sacrifice a treat or earn money for the World Food Day Drive. I sent an email last Friday explaining more about it and Mrs. Paul has discussed it in the Weekly Press.
Your child needs to bring his/her Reading journal to school each Monday. I am required to check the journals weekly. Have your child bring it tomorrow if he or she didn’t bring it today. Each Monday I also check to see if your child has completed a minimum 20 minutes of IXL during the prior week. Remember those items count as a quiz grade in Reading and a quiz grade in Math.
This week students will continue working on the Spanish vowels, on making the sign of the cross, and on greeting someone and responding to a greeting. Have a wonderful week!!
During Music class, students will review the parts of the recorder, and begin notation and fingerings. They will begin to earn “belts” or color strings for new songs or techniques they learn each week. In P.E., students will continue to explore “Fire Safety” We will discuss our exit plans from our homes, reinforce our school exit routes, go on a hunt for “Exit Signs” and “Fire Extinguishers” throughout our school building. Please look for a homework assignment which relates to your home emergency plan. We will also be strengthening our bodies with exercise and game activities. During Technology students will continue typing their “Trick or Treat “ papers and do a government web quest. This week during Art, students will learn about Claude Monet and how to paint with watercolors. They will study Monet’s water lilies paintings.
In Science this week we continue as astronomers and begin our study of the eight planets of our Solar System. We will have a Social Studies test on Friday on the Revolutionary war, the Constitution and the structure of our government. Study the vocabulary words and the branches of government graphic within the Social Studies notebook to prepare. The vocabulary words are located on Quizlet.com so play games for practice. Also each student needs to study the highlighted areas on newspaper 3 & 4 to prepare. We will have a Math test on addition with regrouping to the thousands place on Wednesday. Do the homework each night to prepare. This week’s story is a fun fiction story about a dinosaur. PLEASE have your child do his/her Word Study homework each night. The sorting really assists the students in learning the features as well as how to spell the words.
Please read below for information about the next report. Students will also be required to dress as his/her Saint on Wednesday, November 5th for Mass. It is a separate Religion grade.

The Buzz about Third Grade-September 15, 2014
It was great having so many of you visit the classroom for Tech night last week. The children of parents who attended received a homework pass today. Your child can use it for any homework other than a test review sheet. PLEASE DO NOT CHANGE ANY PASSWORDS ON THE LOGIN PAPER THAT CAME HOME.
Please read the PCRS Weekly Press carefully each Thursday. It is THE source for happenings at PCRS and will keep you “in the know.”The first Book reports were AWESOME! The children did a wonderful job presenting. I will post pictures soon. Thank you for your support.
In Art last week we had a great time last week adding hair, clothing and other features to our self-portraits! This week, we’ll paint the background with watercolors, which will complete this project. In Spanish, Third Grade will identify the following letters from the Spanish alphabet: G, H, I, and J, and recognize and recite the days of the week. During Music class tudents will identify the parts of the recorder and proper playing position. In Technology class students will be participating in the “Olympics” and recording their results. In P.E, we continue our Physical Fitness testing. We write up and discuss our goals on how to improve our individual fitness goals for future tests. Let the games begin! We will review the rules and regulations of Volleyball, as well as the history of the game. We begin learning how to serve and return and volleyball.
The Buzz About Third Grade-September 8, 2014

Join us for Mass on this Wednesday at 9.00am if possible. Please have your child wear his/her church uniform on Wednesday. Families and friends are always welcome for liturgies and prayer services.
Today each child brought home a wish list from the Book Fair. Students will be allowed to shop beginning tomorrow at recess or each day Monday-Thursday, after school, with a parent, until 3:30. The Book Fair will also be open on Wednesday night after 7:30.
